The Alchemist - Bookmark

For this unit we had to come up with an idea for a book that we were given. I was chosen to do it for The Alchemist. As I hadn't read the book I started with some research about the book and done a few doodles to get a rough idea on what it was I wanted to do. After looking up quotes and other information on the book and author, I had a couple of drawings one of them I wanted to improve and use for my bookmark.

Above is the initial drawings I did to get inspiration for what I was going to do for my bookmark. I decided to go with my drawing of the world with a Paulo Coelho quote from The Alchemist going all the way round.

The next stage of my design was drawing it out and filling in all the spaces with the details I wanted. I used pen to create this and it helped me when doing my final design to know what colours I wanted everything to be.

Once my drawing was finished, I re drew it in pencil and then went over the outline in black fine liner pen so that it would all show up clearly when scanning it into photoshop before changing it on indesign.

Here is my final bookmark design. After importing the image into illustrator, I used image trace and changed the threshold to make the image look more like a graphic rather than a drawing. After this I used the live paint bucket tool to fill in all the different shapes with the right colours. Once all the colours were finished I needed to do the writing around the circle. To do this I made a larger circle around the existing one and inserted the writing so it would follow the path of the circle. Once it was going round in the right shape I had to edit the size and spacing of the font so that it would go around the whole circle. I am happy with my final bookmark design!
